Lunchtime Learning: 2012 IBC: Fire & Life Safety Developments

Join AIA|DC and Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc. for a presentation exploring the significant fire/life safety developments that have been implemented in the 2012 IBC (as compared to the 2009 IBC). This presentation will focus on the 1st ten chapters of the IBC.

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
1.) identify significant fire/life safety changes in the 2009 IBC;
2.) determine what types of occupancies or under what conditions these changes are applicable;
3.) recognize the impact of these changes on building design features; and
4.) understanding the reasons behind the changes.

About the speakers:
Renato Molina is a Vice President of Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc. and the Operations Manager for RJA’s Washington, DC and Baltimore area offices. He joined RJA in 1995 after working as a fire protection engineering technician for a fire protection engineering firm. His responsibilities included the analysis and testing of fire alarm systems and fire suppression systems such as wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, and deluge sprinkler systems.

Current work with RJA includes projects worldwide that involve the design of fire protection systems such as automatic sprinkler, private fire main, fire water storage tanks, fire pumps, fire alarm and detection systems. Mr. Molina has also been responsible for fire safety reviews of diverse projects using NFPA, FM, IBC and UBC Codes. He has also been responsible for the assessment and testing of smoke control systems.

Mr. Molina has assisted architectural clients in identifying code requirements by preparing building code summaries, reviewing design documents for code compliance and identifying areas of non-compliance. He has developed alternative approaches to code compliance by identifying options for compliance, consulting with clients on available options and implications.

Thomas Allen is a Senior Consultant in the Laurel, MD office of Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc. He joined RJA in 2001. Mr. Allen’s project experiences includes design, evaluation and review of automatic sprinkler and fire alarm/mass notification systems, evaluation of fire protection system installation, water supply analysis, shop drawing review, performance of hydrant flow tests and building code analysis using NFPA, IBC, and FM codes and standards.

Mr. Allen has assisted architects and facility owners in identifying fire protection and life safety requirements by reviewing design documents, preparing code evaluations and developing solutions to meet code requirements. He has developed alternate approaches to code compliance by identifying options, and consulting with clients and Authority Having Jurisdiction.

He has also performed acceptance testing/commissioning of automatic sprinkler and fire alarm/mass notification systems and smoke control systems. Mr. Allen has also performed site inspections of facilities to determine compliance with the applicable codes.

Facility types include warehouses & distribution, offices, commercial, museums, military, federal government and historic buildings.
